FMCSA-certified medical examiner

DOT physicals for CDL drivers, usually within 24 hours.

Every commercial driver has to pass the DOT physical. A pass can certify you for up to two years (less when a health condition needs closer watching). We have all the forms, and the Arizona MVD is 1.3 miles away.

  1. Call or walk in

Call (480) 545-7988. Walk-ins are welcome, but a booked time means less waiting and makes sure our certified examiner is in.

  2. Your exam

A health history review, a physical exam and a urine test.

  3. Your certificate

We complete the Medical Examination Report and the Medical Examiner’s Certificate, and give you two copies of the report plus the certificate.

Bring with you

  • Your glasses or contacts, if you need them to see
  • Your hearing aids (with working batteries), if you use them
  • Your last Medical Examiner’s Certificate card
  • A list of your medications and doses, with each prescribing doctor’s name, address and phone
  • A yearly clearance letter from your cardiologist or other specialist, if a condition or surgery needs one

Insurance does not cover the DOT exam.

What the exam checks

  • Vision of at least 20/40 in each eye and both together (glasses or contacts allowed)
  • Telling apart the colors of traffic signals
  • Hearing a forced whisper from at least 5 feet
  • Blood pressure: 140/90 or lower. On blood-pressure or non-insulin diabetes medicine, certification may be for up to one year; two years needs 140/90 or lower with no prior history of hypertension
  • Diabetes controlled by diet or medication is allowed; insulin injections need a federal and state exemption
  • No use of Schedule I drugs. Medical marijuana is not allowed by the DOT

The rules are the federal government’s: see the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Who needs a DOT physical?

Federal rules require every commercial driver to pass the DOT physical. Its purpose is to check that you’re fit to drive safely now and for the foreseeable future. A pass can certify you for up to two years; when a health condition needs closer watching, the certificate may be for a shorter time.

Our certified examiner completes the federal paperwork with you: the Medical Examination Report (Commercial Driver Fitness Determination) and the Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
