Adjustments

The adjustment, explained.

A chiropractic adjustment (also called spinal manipulation) is how a trained chiropractor works on a joint that isn’t moving the way it should.

A chiropractor adjusting a patient’s back

During an adjustment, the doctor locates an area of the spine or another joint that isn’t moving well and applies a controlled movement to it, using their hands or a small instrument. The aims are better alignment, better movement and a fuller range of motion.

What to expect

  • No special preparation is needed.
  • We explain what we’re going to do before we do it, and you can ask us to stop at any time.
  • Our doctors use several methods, from hands-on adjustments to gentle instrument-assisted ones, and choose what suits your body and your comfort.
  • Some patients feel a change after one visit; for others it takes weeks or months. We review each visit at the next one and adjust the plan.

Often combined with

Massage therapy to relax the muscles first, decompression for some disc and back problems, and exercises to keep the progress going.
